A Sexual Assault Evidence Kit is detailed examination where any physical injuries are examined; documented and samples collected. This evidence, which is on your body after the assault is collected through swabs; blood/urine sample and obtaining your DNA. Once this evidence is collected the kit can be provided to the police so it can be analyzed by the Centre for Forensic Science. The evidence collected and the analyzed results forms part of the police investigation and court proceedings.
This evidence examination and collection is done by a health practitioner at the emergency department or local health centre. Each hospital emergency department in our region have specialized teams who are highly skilled in forensic evidence collection as well as providing any necessary treatment care and referrals.
